The Socials Mosaic in Manitoba

Manitoba’s Other Socials

Location of Manitoba in Canada
By Qyd (Self from GIS data) [Public domain],
via Wikimedia Commons
Seasons come and go, but the fun filled activities of Manitoba pre-wedding socials tend to step up around winter time. We say it helps to chase away the winter blues, and it’s a dry winter after all. Then again, in the midst of the piercing Prairie cold comes an unpretentious influx of color and warmth from relatively new communities that are untying our traditional understandings of socials. More and more of us are embracing other types of variations to our socials with creative remixes that are now enabling infinite permutations of ethnic food, sound and music from the Philippines, India and China too. That’s because they are among the top visible immigrant groups to arrive to the Prairies. The Chinese are the most numerous visible minority group in Alberta (26.5%) and Saskatchewan (28%), whereas Filipinos continue to dominate the visible minority landscape in Manitoba (34.6%), followed by immigrants from India (22.3%) and China (6.2 %).

Canadian Group for Democracy in Ukraine writes Minister of Foreign Affairs re Russia's attack on Ukraine in Azov Sea

November 26, 2018
Honourable Chrystia Freeland
Minister of Foreign Affairs
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6

Dear Minister,
We are writing on a most urgent matter. Russia’s blockade of the Azov Sea and attack on Ukraine’s ships is another violation of international law requiring immediate response. We thank you for your statement “support for Ukraine and for the condemnation of Russia’s illegal invasion and annexation of Crimea” and for seeking the release of the detained Ukrainians. Regretfully, Russia is immune to words. Therefore, we ask for more; that in concert with other like-minded states Canada seeks punishment for Russia’s latest aggression commensurate with its growing and unrelenting disruption of the world order. It’s latest violation of international law and state sovereignty calls for strong, decisive measures that will be taken seriously by President Vladimir Putin rather than mocked, as has been the case with the current economic sanctions operating to date. This time, they must be strong enough to act as a deterrent rather than an encouragement for further aggression.

The Manitoba Social: It's a Prairie thing!

The Manitoba Social

Ukrainian Socials Table
What do you get if there’s Ukrainian-style rye bread (KUB) on the tables and a spread of kubasa  sausage with other cold cuts, and hot sauerkraut or pizza (optional), some pickles and cheese cubes, and maybe some Tim bits in the equation? Well, it’s most probably a buffet table that’s being set up as a late night snack for a social in Manitoba!  More often than not, it would be a pre-wedding party that is meant to raise money for an engaged couple to help cover their upcoming wedding expenses and to a lesser extent to pay for their honeymoon or a down payment on the house.

3 Tips to Help with Your Social Event

This blog post provides you with three useful tips to promote your social event.

Tip1. Start with the Prizes
By Staff Sgt. Edward Eagerton %5bPublic domain%5d%2c
via Wikimedia Commons
Why? Because shopping for prizes can be a fun time for everyone. It can also generate immediate interest in your event as the word spreads about the prizes. Start by having each future bridesmaid and groomsmen to share the costs for each raffle prize/auction basket. It gets things going. Put a cap on the value of prize baskets to stay focused, but make sure you have a variety of themes for your baskets. Do not duplicate  themes for your prize baskets. When it comes to the more expensive grand prize or door prize, let each of the parents buy the bigger prizes for the pre-wedding party.

Create A YouTube Subscribe Widget To Promote Your Channel

by Ihor Cap
Are you looking for an easy way to increase the YouTube membership for your channel? If so, then consider getting a YouTube widget to promote your channel.   A widget is a little sticky button or banner posted in a fixed spot on your website that asks your visitor to subscribe to your YouTube channel.  It used to be that you could only subscribe to a YouTube channel by visiting the channel of interest directly.  Not anymore. Now you can place a YouTube sticky widget on your website or BlogSpot and each widget click gets you one more subscriber.  The YouTube widget attracts far more attention than just a simple URL hypertext link that’s embedded in your website.  So, if you get a lot of visitors to your website, this is something you definitely want to consider doing.
A YouTube channel widget can be resized to suit your website requirements. For example, a  728x90 banner-style widget may be used when you are not restricted by space limitations. Get a FREE watch us on YouTube 728x90 px - Leaderboard banner from the Bannereasy website for one such promotional YouTube channel widget. This is what you should see:
However, if your website is limited by space such that it must be placed in the left or right-hand column of your website, then you may want a button style widget instead of the banner style one. Again, these widgets can be re-sized to suit your needs.  The next example shows you a couple of button-sized YouTube widgets that are located on the left-hand side bar of the website.  This is what you may see:
Did You Know?
Did you know you can get these great looking button widgets at no cost? All you have to do is copy the line of code below and paste it in the location you want it to appear on your website. Just remember to replace the Username ezreklama or ukrayinets1 with your own YouTube channel Username.

Code for Banner Style Widget is approximately 330 pixels in width by 105 pixels in height

<center><script src=""></script>

<div class="g-ytsubscribe" data-channel="ezreklama" data-layout="full" data-count="default"></div></center>

Code for Button Style Widget here is the same pixel size.

<script src=""></script>

<div class="g-ytsubscribe" data-channel="ukrayinets1" data-layout="full" data-count="default"></div>

The YouTube widget is one great way of driving traffic to your YouTube video channel.

Or, just visit the YouTube Configure a Button Page for additional Subscription Widget layout and configuration options at  However, don’t rely on just one promotional strategy to build your video channel subscriber base, especially if you are new to the game. Do consider additional exciting ways of attracting more YouTube followers, plugboards and blogposts among them.  Free PlugBoards and Backlinks to Promote Your Web Site Products and Services and Promote your website, service or product by posting an article or blog  are two such useful reads to examine at your leisure and be on your way to getting more visitors.

NATO SUMMIT: Calling on Minister Chrystia Freeland to be tough on Russia

For immediate release

NATO SUMMIT: Calling on Minister Chrystia Freeland to be tough on Russia
On the eve of the NATO Summit, the Canadian Group for Democracy in Ukraine asks, in a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland, to go beyond sanctions” in punishing Russia. Also, to find a way to admit Ukraine into NATO’s fold by membership or stronger military support.
The Group sees Russia advancing beyond Ukraine in cyber, propaganda, aggression and chaos because not enough is being done to help Ukraine win the war against the aggressor.  Russia has seen this for some five years now as Western weakness.  Consequently, it is advancing.
The Group calls on Canada to reaffirm its strong support for NATO and lead as the value bearer and strategic adult in the room given the highly personalized and erratic approach to foreign policy by President Donald Trump.  It warns members “to approach the Trump/Putin meeting with caution” and urges a pre-meeting and public disassociation from any “nefarious and secret” deals between the two.
NATO needs Ukraine; world peace and security need Ukraine. For nearly five years—and alone-- it has engaged militarily against democracies’ foremost enemy.  It’s experience in combatting Russia’s warfare in all its guises — cyber, terror, disinformation, kinetic – is unmatched and beyond any price tag. The letter also seeks a reversal of Nord Stream 2.  It’s “a monumental threat” to Europe. “Energy is as much a weapon in Putin's hands as military hardware, cyber - attacks, propaganda, subversion.  It makes Russia stronger and Europe weaker. It invites further Russian aggression.” The Group would also like to see Russia ousted from Ukraine by a UN peacekeeping mission.

Europeans, Americans and Canadians increasingly tend to choose to live as single adults without children

By Ihor Cap
A significant trend in the EU and North America that is receiving little attention in the media is the rise of single person households. We look at the numbers here. The consequences of these trends on our daily lives and well-being are not yet fully understood but will have significant impact on our changing values and family structures, human services, and policy making decisions.
Eurostat – the statistical office of the European Union (EU) observed a rising proportion of single person households. The latest EU household size statistics show that in 2017 some 34% of European households consist of single adults with no children. That’s a 3% increase from 2010 for most European nations but for some countries like Latvia the rise was especially significant with single person households increasing from 25% in 2010 to 35% in 2017.

Eurostat figures also show that this proportion varies across EU Member States with Malta registering the lowest proportion of single person households (< 20%), followed by Portugal and Slovakia at 22% while Sweden tops the list of single adults without children followed by Denmark at 44% and Lithuania at 43% to 42% in Finland and Germany.

Single person households also on the rise in Canada and the U.S.A.
Similar trends were registered for one-person households in Canada from 2011 (27.6%) to 2016 (28.2%). Statscan reports a .6% increase of single adults without children from 2011 to 2016. The proportion of single person households has been steadily rising in Canada from 7.4% in 1951 to 13.4% in 1971, and 20.3% in 1981 to 25.7% in 2001. The percentage of single person households reached a historical high since confederation in 1867, says another statscan report.

The United States of America (USA) also experienced a substantial growth in percentage of one-person households from 7.7% in 1940 to 27.5% in 2011, says the Business Insider. That growth peaked in 1988 and from 1988 to 2011, the percentage of single-person households increased but an average of 3.5% per year.

Study: Horses first domesticated on the territory of Ukraine

Przewalski Horses - closest wild relatives
of domestic horses
Author: Helen Briggs BBC Ukrainian
New genetic research suggests that people first domesticated horses 6,000 years ago on the territory that is now Ukraine, southeast Russia and western Kazakhstan.
Once domesticated animals continued to interbreed with wild mares, they spread across Europe and Asia suggest researchers who published their work in the PNAS journal.
A study conducted at Cambridge University brought together two competing theories about how horses were domesticated.
To this date, this issue has caused heated debate among naturalists.
Archaeological evidence suggests that horses were domesticated in the western part of the Eurasian steppe. Experts believe that animals were used for riding and as a source of meat and milk.
However, the archaeological findings - such as traces of horse milk, found in ancient pots in the western Eurasian steppe– are not consistent with data obtained from mitochondrial DNA.  According to the data, domestication took place in many regions of Europe and Asia.
The authors of the new study examined DNA samples from the nuclei of cells taken in 300 live horses from eight countries in Europe and Asia.
The genetic data were processed by computer models created to describe variousdomestication scenarios.
Dr Vera Warmuth from the Department of Zoology at Cambridgesays: "This suggests that the domestication of horses originated in the western plains and with the spread of domestication there was much cross-breeding with wildhorses."
The theory also explains why the data on mitochondrial DNA - containing only the genes inherited from the mother - suggests that the domestication of  horses occurred many times in different places.
In fact, according to researchers, people used wild mares to increase the number of already domesticated horses because they most surely multiplied poorly in captivity.
That is what they do with the Przewalski horses - the closest wild relatives of modern horses.

The Canadian Group for Democracy in Ukraine asks Prime Minister Trudeau to strengthen sanctions against Russia ahead of the 2018 G7 Summit in Quebec

To avert an environmental disaster and free political prisoners, the Canadian Group for Democracy in Ukraine (CG4DU) calls on Prime Minister Trudeau to increase sanctions against Russia prior to the G7 Summit and boycott the World Cup if Russia fails to comply with international laws.

May 18, 2018 OTTAWA.
World peace and the environment are among the key themes in the G7 Leaders’ Summit taking place in Charlevoix, Quebec 8- 9 June.  In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, CG4DU asks Canada to address Russia’s failure to comply with international law, disturbance of the world order and the creation of a potential environmental disaster by harmonizing sanctions against it and; indeed raising them.
Russia’s global aggression, infiltration of sovereign states and environmental degredation by warfare are of grave concern but to all.  If it can happen in Syria or Ukraine without consequence, it can happen anywhere.  Canada and our allies are duty-bound to work together to punish the culprit,” says Dr. Ihor Cap, a member from Winnipeg.
The CG4DU asserts that Canada’s strength lies in “doing the right thing and taking the higher moral ground”.  As Canada is lagging behind others in leveling sanctions against Russia’s for illegally annexing Crimea, invading Donbas and its ongoing chaos there, the Prime Minister is called to raise the sanctions to the level of our American and British allies.  “Failure to maintain this high standard diminishes our stature in the world as well as our influence,” says the letter.
It also warns of a potentially colossal environmental and humanitarian disaster designed by Russia.
Its stockpiles of prohibited heavy weapons brought into war zone poses a high risk of chemical contamination of the water supply.  Hundreds of thousand civilians --including women and over 100,000 children-- in the Donbas are facing death. “This is another, premeditated, Kremlin organized genocide waiting to happen. Its Holodomor genocide strategically starved some 7- 10 million Ukrainians.  Russia has never been punished.  It wants to get away with ethnic cleansing again,” says Dr. Lada Roslycky, a member currently on assignment in Ukraine.
Finally, the CG4DU calls upon Canada to take a “commanding stand” to ensure the release of Ukrainian political prisoners, unjustifiably incarcerated in subhuman conditions in occupied Crimea and Russia.  “Canada’s leadership depends on convincing the G7 members that Russia must comply immediately with international law or see a boycott of the World Cup”, says Oksana Bashuk Hepburn, an Ottawa member.

Get JustinCase for your car and bicycle tires, and outdoor sports balls

By Ihor Cap
On my way home from work,  I discovered my car tire was super low on air and I had to pull up to a gas station fast to fill it up with air.  You know that feeling when cars are honking at you to let you know something is not quite right with your car, eh? Well, when I finally got to the gas station I was horrified to learn that I had to pay a dollar to fill my car tire with air. I just recalled an earlier discussion I had with my colleagues over the water cooler that one day we will be paying for water and air, and here it is. I paid  a dollar 2 days in a row to have my car tire filled with air. Thank goodness I had a dollar on me too. That was in July, and I was planning to see my mechanic about this slow leak among other car problems in August.  I can’t go paying a dollar a day until August I thought to myself. My tire goes flat overnight every day. I knew I had to do something about this quick.
To my delight, I stopped at Canadian Tire to look around for a pump to fill my pool with air when I bumped into this car tire inflator on the shelf that was on sale.  Because the car tire took priority I took immediate interest in this device and with the $10 dollar additional discount, it was hard to say no. So, I bought it for $20 dollars plus tax. The device is called JustinCase. A clever name I might add. When you really need it, it’s there, just in case.

YouTube Frame from EzReklama Video
JustinCase is a wonderful compact, mobile and versatile digital air compressor that you can use to fill the air in your car tire as well as your bicycle tires, sports balls and balloons. Adaptors are included in the box. Just plug one end into your car's cigarette lighter socket, turn your car keys into the accessories position/mode (forward), unscrew the tire cap from your flat tire, screw on the JustinCase hose to the nipple on the car tire with the flat, and press the big red button to start filling the tire with air.  Wait about 5 minutes, and that’s it folks. It’s that simple. The time varies based on tire differences.  Then you can put the device away in your trunk and keep it with you wherever you go. My car tire is still not fixed, but at least I am not paying a dollar a day more for that inconvenience.
Save on Gas!
Even if your car does not have a flat tire, you can still use this device to keep your all of your tires properly inflated. Believe it or not, “properly inflated tires increase gas mileage by over 3%” says the statement on their box. That’s a few cents per litre savings, assuming a fuel price of one dollar per litre folks and that is good enough for me. It pays for itself, doesn’t it?
Safety, another JustinCase reason
Do yourself and your family a favor and play it safe on the road. Don’t be stuck somewhere out in the boonies and find out there is nothing between you and a gas station for miles on end. You can easily keep this device in the back of your trunk. It also has a flash light switch to help you see in the dark, and a built-in LED digital display to let you read the pounds (force) per square inch of area (psi) numbers.  Do not overinflate or under inflate your tire.  Both can be bad for you. Normal car psi tire pressure readings can vary from 30 to 45 psi depending on the make and size of your vehicle. Most cars are around 30 psi. Check your car tire walls to see what psi level is required for your car tire.  Extreme swings in temperature can also affect the psi levels in your tires, but you need not worry because you have JustinCase, right?  If not, it’s one awesome device you should put on your must have list.

Our Dog Bobo

WINNIPEG, Manitoba 24/01/2003-02/03/2018

Bobo was our first baby before the baby.  Therefore, that means that Bobo had 10 months seniority.  He was home schooled in Ukrainian.  He knew sit, give paw, give the other, lie down, roll over, go away, be quiet and dance!

His job was to alert us and protect us.  He barked at strangers at the door and the window. His favourite person to bark at was the mail delivery person. He could not wait for him or her at the window from which he would observe the world passing by daily. Most of all, he could not wait for any family member to get home from school, work or from just shopping. He ran after rabbits and squirrels, and barked at his most hated bird the raven.  Territorial I guess. His favourite activity was going for a walk everyday with Mama. They walked 1 hour a day at minimum. Only on super cold days and rainy days would we miss this outing. He played with kids running up and down the house, in the backyard or the park.

Bobo loved good food, and Ukrainian kovbasa, borshch and varenyky were his favourites. No kidding. One thing that everyone could really appreciate is that Bobo was like a domestic assistant around the house, so when something dropped to the floor he would scoop it up, and look around for more!

If he looked like he was resting on the floor while you just zipped to the kitchen for second or two, there was a better than chance that only the buns were left in the hamburger you made. That was Bobo. Clever dog. It pays to be patient. Timing is everything and he knew the rhythms in our house.

Finally, and most important, our Dog gave us unconditional love that no one could ever return in kind. He collected loving kisses and hugs from everyone, and we got the same in return. He was a one-of-a-kind loving and loyal dog. When Bobo died, we got his paw prints from the veterinarian to remember him by but more than that Bobo left his paw prints forever in our hearts!

A Manuscript of the Three Kings Which Greeted Jesus was Found in the Vatican

"Revelation of the Magi" by Brent Landau
Translated by Ihor Cap and Dariya Dyryk-Cap

A Professor of Religious Studies from Oklahoma University (USA) translated text that reveals new facts about Christmas and the three Magi who brought gifts to Jesus at birth.
Professor Brent Landau deciphered from a dead Syrian language the manuscript which was stored for 250 years in the Vatican library and the origin of which is unknown.
The text is called "Revelation of the Magi" and is a story about their journey, written in the first person. This is an 8th century copy of the narrative, first recorded in the 3rd century, less than 100 years after the Gospel of Matthew was written- the primary source of history about the "three Kings from the East," the publication notes.
The "Revelation of the Magi" differs significantly from other versions of this biblical story. According to the document, the Magi came not from Persia, but from the land of Shir which is associated with ancient China. "It is reported that they were descendants of Seth, the third son of Adam, and belonged to the sect, who prayed without words" - said the article.
In the traditional legend it is known that there were three magi who came to greet the newborn Jesus. In the "Revelation" it is said there were “dozens.” Matthew makes no mention as to how many Magi there were.
However, Professor Landau doubt’s that the "Revelation" is really written by one of the Magi, but believes that the anonymous authors identified themselves with these mystics and their sect. According to Landau, the "Revelation" states that Seth passed on to his descendants the prophecy about the star that foretold the birth of God in human form.

In the same decrypted text, the discussion follows that Jesus Christ and the Star of Bethlehem – are one and the same. That Christ is capable of transforming himself into everything, and anything.

Who Let The Cow Out?

blog post by Ihor Cap
Walking the Cow

YouTube frame from ukrayinets1 channel
Our city-raised son Symon stayed a few days at a relative’s homestead in Verkhnie Syniovydne that is located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. A high spot of his experience was taking the cow to the vacant pasture to graze among the daisies and buttercups. It seemed like a simple enough assignment, but Symon learned a thing or two along the way. It’s a good thing he had a more experienced elder to guide him through the journey. “Go!”  “Go!” he shouted at the cow, and pounced on the rope from time to time.  I was impressed.

This was not the Symon I knew. It was quite a different experience in the country side for Symon. Far different from playing his Wii and DS games and watching his daily diet of TV back home. He thoroughly enjoyed himself. I’m glad he did. Besides, most of the TV channels back home are fuller of manure than the lush cow pastures of Ukraine. All in all, it was a memorable time for Symon. Can you guess my number game

Guess my number by Lance Flavell
