Last Friday, Government of Canada officials met with their Ukrainian counterparts to discuss long-term security commitments between our two countries. During the meeting, Canadian officials reiterated Canada’s commitment to using all tools at our disposal to support Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
These negotiations will build on existing Canadian and Ukrainian efforts on a range of priorities and will enhance and guide bilateral cooperation for years to come. Discussions will focus on pairing Canadian capabilities with Ukrainian needs, notably ensuring a sustainable force to defend Ukraine from Russian aggression now and in the future and strengthening Ukraine’s economic stability and resilience. In addition, our two countries will discuss further technical and financial support for Ukraine’s immediate needs as well as to implement the good governance necessary to advance Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations, such as the continued implementation of law enforcement, judiciary, anti-corruption, corporate governance, economic, security sector, and state management reforms.
Canada and its Allies endorsed the G7 Joint Declaration of Support to Ukraine on the margins of the NATO Summit in July, and Canada is the third G7 member to subsequently launch bilateral negotiations with Ukraine under the framework of that G7 Joint Declaration. Canada, along with its partners and Allies have committed to standing united with Ukraine and being unwavering in their support for the Ukrainian people as they fight Russian aggression, for as long as it takes.
