Mike’s idea for Short Film Fan came to him in the spring of 2014, when he decided that the time was right to create the blog and to share his fascination with this quality film genre with the world. After launching Short Film Fan, Mike briefly wondered if anyone would even want to read articles about Canadian short films. Would the site resonate with the public? In fact, he believed that he would blog about Canadian shorts for about six months, shut it down, and blog about a different topic. Focused on finding good stories and sacrificing many hours of his personal time to write his articles, Mike became pleasantly surprised at what happened to him and Short Film Fan next.
Since its launch in May of 2014, Short Film Fan has been viewed in almost every country in the world, with the top views coming from Canada, the U.S., Brazil, India, and the U.K. His subscriber numbers have doubled since last year, with most coming from Canada, the U.S. and parts of Europe. Mike’s blog and writing skill has been noticed by a number of individuals involved with Canadian short films, including the communications staff with the National Film Board and with CBC’s Short Film Face Off. As a result, Mike has written and published a number of articles featuring both of these entities. Furthermore, he has reviewed numerous shorts and interviewed a number of Canadian film producers. Guest writers have also had their articles published on Short Film Fan.
As a result of his hard work and vision, Mike’s dream of promoting Canadian short films to the world has become a reality through Short Film Fan. People who had never heard of or seen a Canadian short film became fans of the genre. As well, Mike formed new friendships and professional partnerships within the industry.
